Facebook and Yelp backing away from the daily deals game. Do you think this means Groupon won or that it too will fail?

Looks like Facebook is shuttering up the windows on their deals platform, and now Yelp is scaling theirs back... It's interesting to me because these are the only two players I ever actually used in the deals space. Yelp seems like an obvious place from which to recieve offers for things you might like. After all it's just a collection of my ratings for businesses. Facebook too, since they know all sorts of things about us based on our friends, likes, ad clicks, etc...

So, the only real question left in my mind is whether this means that Groupon won or that it is destined to fail. What do you think?

"For Groupon and LivingSocial, how do they keep people buying deals, or even opening emails in the long-term? And for others in the space that don’t have the scale of these two companies, the questions are tougher. If Facebook and Yelp can’t make it work, how can these smaller competitors?"

Lastly, Color me super-stoked that I didn't take that equity-only gig building that social deals app last year...

“Lucky Nerds is my independent web application lab. It's where I can toy with random ideas I can't get out of my head while getting the chance to experiment with new techniques and technologies.”

“There are several projects underway that I hope see the light of day, preferably before it becomes embarrassing.”
